A Modern Voice For Women

WELCOME TO THE CAMBRIDGE FEDERATION

There is a wealth of difference between perception of the WI and reality. The Cambridge Federation, like most others, has plenty of people who can make jam, and many WIs who still regularly sing Jerusalem but we also have members with many other skills, from crafts to fundraising, home-making skills to science, campaign lobbying to cake-making – this is the modern WI ! With around 70 individual WIs in our Federation there are plenty to choose from and we cover a large area from near Ely in the north to near Royston in the South and from Linton in the east to Gamlingay in the west.

Each WI is run by its members, for its members, and therefore its activities and the way it works reflects the needs and wishes of those members. There are many variations but new members can be sure of a welcome wherever they go and the basic tenet established almost 100 years ago still holds good today. Friendship, education and enjoyment are the themes – and its amazing how differently these can be presented. Dining out/theatre clubs, walking/fitness, poetry, reading and craft groups and many other activities abound as well as local community projects and joining in nationwide campaigning.

The Cambridge Federation also runs many events including science evenings, health and social interest events, day-schools for crafts of various kinds and coach visits to many places of interest as well as ‘just for fun’ activities such as a hog roast, a quiz evening and entertainment from The Federation Players – our own drama group. There are also two weekend breaks which take us further afield. Sub-committees work hard to offer a variety of activities* as well as campaigning on issues voted for by members. The National Federation has an excellent website (thewi.org.uk) giving details of current campaigns as well as information about individual WIs on a county-by-county basis.

If you are thinking of joining the WI – don’t just think, but please do come along – you can ring our Federation office to find your nearest WIs. Our eco-friendly offices are open Mon /Tues/Thurs from 10am to 3pm tel 01223 234872.

*Pictures of recent activities and details of future events can be seen in the Photo Gallery and Events pages.
