On behalf of all members, welcome to CFWI website.
Here in the Federation we are proud of our sixty nine Institutes, five of them within the city of Cambridge, and hope you feel tempted to join one in your area.
Membership of a WI means you are also a member of Cambridge Federation of Women's Institutes and by implication a member of the National Federation of Women's Institutes. In other words, a member of a very large organisation with over 230,000 members.
But the WI starts with joining a group of ladies who enjoy each other's company as well as listening to invited speakers, and participation in a myriad number of learning activities from cookery to literature, rural affairs to gardening, crafts to computing and figures to campaigns - such as keeping open our small post offices. Whatever you like to learn afresh the WI can provide the opportunity.
When you pay your annual subscription of £29.50 (due in January) you open up a world of friendship, enjoyment, enlightenment, in fact, a thoroughly good time. Through the resolutions we debate and vote upon each year we have mandates to lobby governments on so many issues such as health matters, housing, care of the elderly, hazardous chemicals to name but several areas of concern. It is this added extra that make the WI a loved and accepted part of our national heritage.
If there is no WI in your village but you feel it would be something several ladies would enjoy do contact the office and we can help with the inauguration of a new Institute almost immediately.
I am a member of Cottenham WI. My membership entitles me, as it does every member in the Federation, to stand for election to County Committees and to the Executive Committee. But above all it is the fun and friendship, enjoyment and enlightenment that the WI offers you. I hope we in the Cambridge Federation can be those friends you have yet to meet.
